The fourth quarter has a way of sneaking up on you.
One minute you're enjoying the slower pace of summer, and the next you're staring at October on the calendar wondering how you're going to finish the year strong, prepare for taxes, handle the holiday rush, and somehow find time to think about next year. For a skincare business, Q4 can be especially busy. Clients may be booking treatments before the holidays, retail sales may pick up, employees may be asking about schedules, and expenses can start piling up. That's exactly why this is a good time to stop for a moment and look at the bigger picture. What does your business actually need next? Start With the Numbers Before deciding what to do next, take a look at what has already happened this year. Pull up your Profit & Loss report and look at your revenue and expenses for the first three quarters. Which services have been most profitable? Where have your expenses increased? Are you spending more on supplies, payroll, advertising, or software than you expected? And perhaps most importantly, is your business actually making the profit you thought it was? The answers can be quite different from what you might expect. A busy treatment room doesn't automatically mean a highly profitable service. A product line that generates lots of sales may have surprisingly thin margins. And an expense that seemed insignificant each month can add up to a substantial annual cost. Look at Your Cash Flow Profit and cash aren't the same thing. You can have a profitable business and still find yourself wondering where the money went when a large bill comes due. Take a look at your expected cash coming in and going out during the final months of the year. Consider upcoming payroll, rent, inventory purchases, taxes, equipment, bonuses, and other large expenses. If you know a major expense is coming, it's much easier to prepare for it when you see it on the calendar rather than discovering it when the bill arrives. Decide What Deserves Your Money Q4 is a great time to review your spending. Maybe you've been thinking about upgrading your treatment equipment. Perhaps you want to redesign your website, increase your advertising budget, hire another esthetician, or add a new service. Those decisions shouldn't be based solely on whether you *want* something. Ask whether the business can afford it and whether the investment makes sense. Will it generate additional revenue? Save you time? Improve the client experience? Allow you to take on more appointments? Sometimes spending money is exactly what your business needs. Sometimes the smartest move is keeping the money in the bank. Your numbers can help you decide which is which. Don't Forget About Taxes Nobody enjoys getting surprised by a tax bill. Q4 is an excellent time to review your year-to-date income and expenses and estimate where you're likely to land for the full year. That gives you time to make informed decisions before December 31. Depending on your situation, there may also be legitimate year-end planning opportunities worth discussing with your tax professional. The important thing is to start the conversation before the year is over. Look Ahead to Next Year Once you've reviewed the current year, take a few minutes to think about what you want the business to look like next year. Do you want more clients? Higher prices? Another employee? A second location? More time away from the business? Higher profits? Those goals have financial consequences. If you want to hire, you'll need to understand what that employee will cost. If you want more profit, you'll need to know where your margins are today. If you want to work fewer hours, your pricing and staffing may need to change. A good business plan connects your goals with the numbers. Pick Three Priorities You don't need a complex strategic plan. Just choose three things that would make the biggest difference to your business over the next six to twelve months. Maybe it's: * Increasing prices on your most popular services * Getting your bookkeeping completely up to date * Building a three-month cash reserve * Reducing unnecessary subscriptions and expenses * Hiring help * Improving your retail margins * Preparing for a tax bill * Finally taking that vacation you've been postponing Put the ones you choose in writing and keep them somewhere you can see them often. Then decide chich needs to happen first. Make Q4 Work for You The end of the year is an opportunity to take a breath, look at what the numbers are telling you, and make some thoughtful decisions about where your business is going. Your skincare business has probably changed quite a bit since January and this means your financial plan should change with it. And if you're not sure what your numbers are telling you, that's where a good bookkeeper can make a big difference. Clean, current books give you something much more useful than a report at tax time: a clear picture of what's happening inside your business. Shoot me a message if you need a little help here.
